How does this medicine work

Cyclophosphamide is a clear liquid that is injected into a vein and it also available in tablet form which you can take by mouth. It works as follows:- 

Cyclophosphamide is a type of chemotherapy drug that works by binding to DNA, which interferes with the cell's ability to divide and grow. This disruption in the DNA structure ultimately leads to the death of cancer cells. Unlike some other drugs, cyclophosphamide doesn't specifically target cells in a particular phase of the cell cycle.

What is is useful for?

Primary uses are to treat breast cancer, conditioning regimen for stem cell transplant, Ewing's sarcoma, acute myelogenous leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, chronic myelogenous leukemia, pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia, lung cancer, Burkitt's lymphoma, Hodgkin's lymphoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, lymphoproliferative disease, multiple myeloma, mycosis fungoides, neuroblastoma, ovarian cancer, retinoblastoma, and rhabdomyosarcoma.

Secondarily this drug is also used to treat bladder cancer, brain cancer, cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, gestational trophoblastic neoplasia, acute lymphocytic leukemia, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, osteosarcoma, soft tissue sarcoma, testicular cancer, thymoma, Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia, and Wilm's tumor.

What if you miss the dose?

Cyclophosphamide is available in both tablet and liquid form which is given by an injection. It is necessary and advisable to follow the instructions regarding the dosage. Please book a consultation with our Oncology Clinical Specialist to know more about what happens if you miss the dose.

Other drugs such as Allopurinol, Amiodarone, Digoxin , Hydrochlorothiazide, Indomethacin , Phenobarbital, Phenytoin , or Warfarin may interact with Cyclophosphamide. Tell your doctor if you are taking these or any other drugs as your dose may need to be changed.

Safety Advice : Pregnancy, Liver or Kidney Damaged

Cyclophosphamide may cause sterility in men and menopause in women. The risk of this occurring depends on the dose of cyclophosphamide and your age. If you plan to have children, discuss this with your doctor before being treated with cyclophosphamide.

Cyclophosphamide may damage sperm and may harm the baby if used during pregnancy. It is best to use birth control while being treated with cyclophosphamide. Tell your doctor right away if you or your partner becomes pregnant. Do not breast feed during treatment.
