When used alongside other treatments that lower hormone levels, abiraterone helps reduce testosterone to levels that can effectively treat cancer.

Abiraterone may damage sperm and may harm the baby if used during pregnancy. It is best to use birth control while being treated with abiraterone. Male patients must use a condom and another effective birth control method when having sexual activity with a woman who is pregnant or can become pregnant while taking abiraterone and for one week after the last dose of abiraterone. Tell your doctor right away if your partner becomes pregnant. Do not breastfeed during treatment.
